I have been in Canada 6 years, yet I haven’t lost my British slang. In fact I have given a few Canadians a whole new dictionary of words. Being a Brit in Canada, it took a while just getting around the Canadian vocabulary so I can only imagine how Canadians seem to be confused with our slang words.
I thought I would provide a list of words and there meanings.
- Shambles – Plan gone wrong
- Loo – Toilet
- Do – Party
- Plastered – Drunk
- Her’s majesty pleasure – Prison
- Up the duff – Pregnant
- Nosh – Food
- Bees and Knees – Awesome
- Kip – Sleep
- Gutted – Devastated
- Starkers – Completely naked
- Bottle – Courage
- Doddle – Easy
- Ta – Thanks
- Off your trolley – Nuts, crazy or mad
- Posh – High class
- Full of beans – Lots of energy
- Dodgy – Not to be trusted
- Give us a bell – Call me
- A flick – A movie
- Pins – Legs
- Afters – Dessert
- Moggy – Cat
- Mucker – Pal
- Parky – Chilly
- Telly – Television
- Tea – Dinner
- Pint – Beer
- Fit – Hot looking person
- Dogs breakfast – A mess
There is hundreds of words, far to many to list, however I would love to know your thoughts.
Love this list. One of the words I hear from Brits is “brilliant”. It seems to run a gamut of meanings from very nice to wow. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
